Common questions
Getting started
What is XOsign, in one paragraph?
Upload an agreement and XOsign reads it. It tells you what the document says in plain language, points out the parts that are unusual or one-sided, can translate it, can suggest edits, and can send it out for signature. Signing is free and unlimited on every plan, including the free one.
It is one workspace from the moment a document arrives to the moment it is signed and filed.
Can I try it before I sign up?
Yes. Open the sample document and the whole flow runs on a real agreement with nothing to set up and no questions to answer first.
A guest workspace is temporary by design: it is swept about a week after it is created. When you want to keep what you did, it comes with you into an account. If new accounts aren’t open yet, join the waitlist and we’ll tell you when they are.
What can I put into it?
PDFs, Word and other Office files, and photos of paper. You can also write a document from scratch in the composer.
Everything that arrives is read on the way in, whatever door it came through — an upload, an email, or a bulk import — so it is classified and filed without you picking a folder or telling us what it is.
What languages does XOsign speak?
Seven, fully: English, Spanish (Mexican), French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Vietnamese. These are complete translations of the product, not a machine pass over a few buttons — every screen is checked for untranslated text before a language ships.
Translating a document is a separate thing from the interface language, and it can translate into far more languages than the seven the app itself is written in.
The XOdoc
What is an XOdoc?
An XOdoc is a smart document, not an editable one. It is your document once XOsign understands it: it knows what it says, files itself, keeps track of every copy that leaves, compares itself to the version the other side sent, translates, fills in and signs. That understanding is the whole point.
Being able to type in it is an optional working copy you switch on when you need it — not what makes it an XOdoc. It lives in the cloud rather than as a file on your computer; what leaves XOsign is a copy, a PDF or Word file minted when you download, send for signature, or share.
Do I have to make my document editable?
No, and most documents never need it. Making a document editable is something you choose — there is a "Make this document editable" step — and it is part of the one-time Deeper read, 6 credits a page.
You need it to redline: rewriting clauses means the text has to be text. Everything else — reading it, explaining it, flagging what is unusual, translating it, filling in fields, sending it for signature, filing it — works on documents you never made editable, and those keep looking exactly like the original.
Once a document is editable, does every AI action cost more?
No. Making it editable is part of the one-time Deeper read, 6 credits a page. After that, the AI work on it is free — asking it questions, re-reading it, suggesting edits again.
Can it suggest changes to a contract?
Yes. It proposes specific edits, shows you the before and after, and explains why each one is there. You accept or reject each suggestion — nothing changes on its own.
It is not legal advice and it is not a decision. It is a reading, and the point of it is that you walk into the conversation knowing what is in the document. When it matters, send the marked-up version to your attorney; we always recommend having a lawyer look at anything you are signing.
Signing
Does signing cost anything?
No. Sending a document for signature and signing one are free and unlimited on every plan, including the free one. Credits are spent only when XO reads a document for you, and you see the price before anything is charged.
Do the people I send to need an account?
No. A signer gets a link, opens it, and signs. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
Are the signatures legally binding?
Electronic signatures are recognized under the U.S. ESIGN Act and UETA, and XOsign is built around what those laws ask for: proof the signer agreed to sign electronically, proof of who they were, a record of what they saw, and a copy they can keep.
Whether any particular document holds up depends on the document and where you are, and that is a question for a lawyer, not for us.
How do I check that a signed document is genuine?
Every finished document carries a fingerprint — a SHA-256 hash of the exact bytes — and a timestamp from an independent authority under the RFC 3161 standard, which proves the document existed in that form at that moment. Drop the file into the verify page and it tells you whether it matches.
Plans and credits
What exactly am I paying for?
Credits, and only when XO reads a document for you. Unlocking a document, which reads it and files it, is 1 credit a page; the deeper read behind Summary, Clauses, Risks and Suggest edits is 6 credits a page, once per document. Signing, sending, storing and organizing never use credits.
Every plan comes with credits each month — the free plan includes 50 — and you always see the price before anything is charged.
What if I run out of credits before the month is up?
You can buy more credits any time — 250, 500, 1,000 or 2,500, or a larger amount — without changing your plan. Anyone can buy them, including people with no plan at all.
Credits you buy never expire, and your monthly credits are used first. The higher your plan, the less each credit costs; with no plan you pay the top of the ladder.
Is the free plan actually usable?
Yes, for signing: unlimited signing, one person on the account, 50 credits a month, and a one-time 50-credit sign-up bonus to try the reading and review side. If all you need is to get documents signed, you never have to pay us. Every paid plan has unlimited people on one account.
Can I cancel, and do you refund?
You can cancel any time and keep the plan until the end of the period you have paid for. Refunds have their own written policy rather than a case-by-case guess.
Files and organizing
I have years of paperwork. Can I bring it all in at once?
Yes. Point the importer at a folder, a pile of files, or a zip — zips are opened and what is inside them is counted too.
Nothing is uploaded, read by AI, or charged until you say go. Before that you see the count and the estimate: how many documents, how many pages, how much of it the credits you already hold cover, and roughly what the rest would come to.
Importing the same paperwork twice does not cost twice. A page XOsign has already read is never charged again, so a re-upload, an overlapping folder, or a second pass at the same archive costs nothing for the pages it has already seen.
How do I pay for reading a big pile of files?
In credits, the same unit the rest of the product uses. Unlocking and filing a page is 1 credit. Your plan's monthly credits are used first, and you can buy more at your plan's rate. The free plan includes 50 credits a month, with no card.
Two things keep the bill honest. A page you have already paid for is never charged again — the ledger refuses to bill the same page twice, so re-uploading, overlapping folders and second passes are free for anything already read. And credits you buy never expire.
The deeper read — the pass that weighs obligations and jurisdiction rather than just filing the document — is opt-in, and you are shown what it will cost before it runs. When a document changes, only the pages that actually changed are re-read.
Do I have to file everything myself?
No. That is the point of reading every document on the way in. When XOsign recognizes an insurance certificate, a licence, a W-9, a lien waiver or a similar compliance document, it pulls the facts off it — who, what coverage, which project, when it expires — and files it, without asking you to pick a folder or say what it is.
Expiry dates are the one thing it will double-check with you. If it is not confident about a date, it asks once before scheduling a reminder on it, because a wrong expiry nobody notices is worse than typing it yourself.
Can I get my documents back out?
Always. Download any document as a PDF or a Word file, at any time, on any plan. Nothing is locked in.
Security and trust
How is my data protected?
Two-step sign-in, encryption in transit and at rest, a fingerprint (SHA-256) on every finished document, independent RFC 3161 timestamps, and an audit log that can only be added to — nothing in it can be edited or deleted, including by us.
Who at XOsign can read my documents?
Access is scoped to your account, and support only reaches a document when you ask us to look at one. What we do with data, who processes it on our behalf, and how long we keep it is all written down rather than described in a sentence.
Can I tell where a copy of my document ended up?
Yes — that is XOtrace. Every time a document's bytes leave into someone's possession — a download, a print, an email attachment, a certified letter — the copy gets its own serial and a record of who took it, when, and from where. Looking at a document inside XOsign is not an export and is not logged that way.
On paid plans that include it, each copy also carries a concealed mark that survives printing, photocopying, scanning and screenshots, so a page someone hands you can be traced back to the copy it came from. The free plan is not traced at all.
Templates
Do you provide ready-made documents?
Yes, there is a library of starting points built into the product. They are starting points, not finished legal documents: they have not been reviewed by an attorney, they do not know your state or your job, and you should treat them as a draft to work from.
Can I save my own contract as a template?
Yes, on any paid plan, with no limit on how many you keep. The free plan does not store your own templates.
Teams
How many people can use one account?
Every paid plan has unlimited users — you are not billed per seat. The free plan is one person.
Above the entry plans you also get a shared workspace with roles, so people see what they should and not what they should not.
Can documents go out under my company's name?
Yes. Your logo, colors and business details go on the documents and the emails your clients receive, from the Starter plan up.
Legal
Is any of this legal advice?
No, and it never will be. XOsign helps you understand a document — what it says, what is unusual in it, what a clause would mean in practice. It does not decide anything for you, it does not tell you whether to sign, and it is not a law firm.
For anything that matters, we always recommend having an attorney look at it. When you have marked up a document here, that markup is exactly what you want to hand them.
What if the AI gets something wrong?
It can. That is why every reading shows you where in the document it came from, so you can check it against the original in one click rather than taking its word for it.
Treat it as a fast, well-read assistant that has read the whole thing carefully — not as the final say.
Can I delete my account and my data?
Yes. Deleting the account removes your documents and your data on the schedule set out in the privacy policy.
Ask the assistant
Answers from our help articles — not legal advice
Hi! I'm the XOsign assistant. Ask me anything about signing, plans, security, or getting started — I'll answer from our help articles.
XOsign is an information platform, not a law firm. The assistant answers from our help articles and can’t give legal advice — for that, talk to a qualified attorney. Questions asked here are kept so we can improve these articles; a real person is always one message away.
